New UFT Ad: Thumbs Up or Down?

Personally, I'm giving Mulgrew a thumbs up on this one. I think it hits the right notes and give people a few simple ideas to think about. The deform movement has been masterful at controlling the discussion; I think this ad helps take some of that back. Billionaires not paying taxes, class sizes exploding, the snowstorm fiasco reminding people how much they hate Bloomie--good stuff. What do you think?

(UPDATE: I deleted the video as it was slowing this site down something awful. You can see the video here.)

I disagree with you. The commercial is too weak and Weingartenish. The commercial should have showed that he wants inexperienced and non-vested teachers over experienced teachers because it is not about what's best for the children its about saving money.

Mulgrew is still tiptoeing his way through the commercial as to not anger the mayor. It's non-threatening and the message of closing schools on a bogus, inaccurate progress report should have been in the commercial.

It's way past time for the UFT to act like a labor union, not a "collaborative" agency of the DOE.

I wonder what this cost. Mulgrew should take the bullhorn out on the steps of CityTime, er, City Hall and blast the mayor 24/7

I'd like the ad to be a bit more radical, too, but at least this ad gives the message in small, digestible sound bytes that the public will get. The rich guy who wants to take away your teachers seems to me the kind of thing that will resonate with parents.

There should be an ad targeting other municipal workers. Explain to them that if Bloomberg succeeds with his taking away of seniority they are next.

I think it's good that the UFT is beginning to say something in the wake of all the vitriol teachers have had to swallow lately. However, I am amazed how, at every turn, the union in general and Mulgrew in particular manage to squander any opportunity to inform the public about the real reason the Mayor is attacking seniority rights and the ATRs. He can't just be ignorant of all the media slander, which has me thinking that there must be some hidden agenda somewhere.
